The Worship Illusion

Worship is one of the most talked-about things in the church and, at the same time, one of the most misunderstood. Today, many have reduced worship to a moment, a sound, or an atmosphere. A few slow songs, a few fast songs, the right lighting, the right environment, and we call it worship. But Scripture shows us something deeper. Jesus said: “These people honour Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. ” (Matthew 15:8) God has never been impressed by outward expression without inward surrender. True worship was never meant to be built on music alone. Music can support worship, but it can never replace a surrendered life. Jesus told the woman at the well: “The true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. ” (John 4:23) Notice what Jesus did not say. He did not say God is seeking talented singers. He did not say God is seeking perfect stages. He said the Father is seeking worshippers. Somewhere along the way, the church became more focused on presentation than presence.
